4. Activism and Movement Building
In this module on Activism and Movement Building we start focussing on the capacities, techniques, approaches, competences, that may help us build stronger alliances, more efective initiatives towards social change in general, and towards Health 4 All in particular.
What is our understanding of social transformation? How do we engage with our communities to build a fairer and more democratic societies which include Health for All? Let's build strategies, map actors and launch collective campaigns.
1. Live workshop with Ben Eder (MedAct)
This time the module works differently: we start with a workshop live with Ben Eder from MedAct. Ben will invite us to go to the roots of social change, of community work and social transformation. We will explore the why (what is our aim), the how (what is the spirit and the approach that drives social change from the grassroots), the what (examples of interesting campaigns and processes), and the us (how we become a collective subject for social change).
The session will include theoretical approaches and practical work by participants. As it is not a prepared material, we cannot offer it beforewards, but we will upload the recording some days after.
1.2. (Video) Bringing about social change: building collective strategies (by HRA)
This video aims to help understand and guide into the main elements of a collective strategy as an agreed path for social transformation.
Strategies are important when challenges are complex and require effort, people, resources and time. This is the case if we want to reach our vision of Health 4 All.
As refferences for this video, besides Medact's and Health Rights Action work, you can consult in this folder interesting materials, like the handbook by PHM "Building a Movement for Health".
1.3 Graphic summary of the contents of the video Bringing about change: collective strategies
Here you can download a pdf that summarises the contents of the video. And below we paste you the images you will find in the pdf.
Below just an illustration of what is found in the above-linked file.

2. Organising campaigns to contribute to social change
This section goes into the practice of campaigning as one strategic tool that helps us pushing for the social transformations that we aim.
2.1 (Video) How to organise a campaign to raise awareness and push for social transformation (by Nicky Gabriëls)
This video introduces us to how Viva Salud organises awareness raising and advocacy campaigns, and invites us to understand the cycle of a transformative campaign. It is presented by Nicky Gabriëls, campaign officer at Viva Salud.
2.1 (Video) Small Talks, Big Changes: Nicky, Laura and Jigs on activism and campaigns for social change
This video shares the encounter between Laura Baeyens and Jigs Clamor. Laura and Jigs meet in Antwerp some years ago, both are involved in social movements defending Human Rights in Philippines and they took the opportunity to exchange about their experiences in activism and movement building.
Now, time for debate and bringing in your opinions
You may react to these presentations and materials the way you prefer, though we may trigger through some questions:
- Your approach: What is your own approach to activism, campaigning and movement building? How to integrate a transformative perspective or action on this regard in the struggles for the right to health?
- Using these materials: Do you think these materials could have some use for future trainings and awareness raising actions? (Is there something that should be improved, for it to happen?)
